The cost of non-compliance
Business travelers who book outside of corporate travel policy spend an average of $2,881 more per year than those who follow the rules, says a study by the Global Business Travel Association and Concur.
Non-compliant travelers stayed in luxury hotels three times as often as compliant travelers (14% vs. 5%), booked first-class airline tickets three times as often (20% vs. 6%), and spent an average of $314 more on car rentals per year.
But they also tended to be new and young, and much more likely to be using mobile apps (58% vs. 37%), suggesting that travel programs should be sure their booking sites work as well on phones as on desktops.
Indeed, the intent was not always to beat the system and spend more. Non-compliant travelers actually spent an average $26 less per year on airfare than those who booked preferred carriers.
