Theme park ravaged by Katrina set for demolition
The poster child of creepy abandoned theme parks is set to be finally demolished over the next few months.
New Orleans’ Six Flags theme park has sat idle for nearly 20 years since Hurricane Katrina.
Wrecking crews are expected to begin work this month and the site will be redeveloped
Demolition will last five months according to developer Troy Henry.
Company Bayou Phoenix is planning a sports and entertainment complex on the site, with hotels, restaurants, a water park, a lake and beach.
However, for this to happen the developer is seeking about $100 million in taxpayer funds as part of a private-public arrangement.
Bayou Phoenix last year signed a 50-year lease with the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority for the 227 acre site.
Henry told local media he is targeting 2027 to have the first phase of the new development up and running.
