Thomas Cook has confirmed a further 13 shops are to close with the loss of up to 70 jobs.

The stores are among the 200 shops Cook said it was looking to shut over a two-year period following its merger with the Co-operative Travel and Midlands Co-op and as part of a cost-cutting drive announced last December.

Six Thomas Cook shops in Leeds, Coventry and Stony Stratford will close, four Co-op Travels in Mansfield, Bristol, Chingford and Leeds and and three Midlands Co-op shops will close.

Management have entered into a 30-day consultation with staff, some of whom may be redeployed elsewhere within the Grup.

Thomas Cook UK mainstream chief executive Ian Ailles said: "We can confirm that, as part of our business-as-usual review of our retail stores and as part of the previous announcement made in December 2011, we’re proposing to close a small number of stores and are now undertaking 30 days consultation with our colleagues."
