Thomson and First Choice boss Dermot Blastland has pledged to trade in his BMW 630i coupe for a greener model.

The operator’s managing director is looking at a number of options  including the Lexus 450 Hybrid that emits less CO 2  than a Vauxhall Corsa.

He will be also be looking at the Audi Q5 and Freelander, the company said.

Blastland’s commitment to trade in his car for a more environmentally efficient model came on Friday as the company marked World Environment Day.

The company launched a World Care Fund incentive for its agents. The three month incentive aims to motivate staff to learn more about the environment and community projects supported by the World Care Fund as well as encourage customers to make a donation.

Blastland said: “We wanted to mark World Environment Day across all areas of our business with activities happening in our shops, at our head office, airline and overseas.

“The World Care Fund is a great scheme to engage customers about sustainable tourism and encourage them to make a donation towards projects benefiting the environment and local communities overseas.

“It is therefore essential that we educate our front line staff on the World Care Fund so they can communicate its benefits effectively to customers and in turn increase the amount of donations.

“With over 873 retail shops taking part in the incentive we have an opportunity to make a real difference. “

One shop per region across the UK that generates the highest percentage of World Care Fund donations for all holidays booked, by successfully communicating how the joint fundraising contributions are changing lives overseas, will win a World Care Fund trip for one member of their team.

This will offer agents the opportunity to visit a project that is supported by customer donations.

The agents from the different winning regions will be selected by the regional sales manager in their area.

All staff across the company were asked to make a green pledge, promising to do something to help the environment or their local community such as saving energy and water or helping to preserve local wildlife.
