Thomson challenging easyJet for top travel online slot
Thomson is pushing easyJet hard to become the highest placed travel site among the top 50 UK e-retailers.
The lastest Hot Shops List from research group IMRG-Hitwise shows easyJet in tenth place, down from eighth a year ago, while Thomson Holidays has risen two places to 11th.
Eleven travel companies feature in the top 50, although brands such as Expedia have slipped down the rankings to 12th place from seventh, Ryanair from ninth to 14th, lastminute.com from 12th to 17th, Thomas Cook from 18th to 25th, British Airways down from 11th to 19th and First Choice from 20th to 29th.
Other travel companies in the top 50 are Travelodge UK (40th), TravelRepublic (48th) and Thomsonfly.com (50th).
Online agency TravelRepublic.co.uk is one of 12 newcomers to the list since May 2006
Travel brands that have dropped out of the list include MyTravel, bmibaby, XL.com, Flybe.com, Jet2.com, InterContinental Hotels, Monarch Airlines and Opodo.
The overall top slot is retained by Amazon UK, followed by Aplle Computer, Play.com, Tesco.com, Argos, Amazon.com, Marks & Spencer, Tesco Direct and Next.
The research found clothing as being the fastest growing online shopping sector while grocery sales are also booming over the internet.
IMRG CEO James Roper said there was £60 billion-worth of online sales at stake this year.
He said it was surprising that so many traditional high street retailers are still failing to appear on the list.
“The internet is the first place millions of people go for their shopping inspiration, and has economic conditions harden and money gets tighter, it’s inevitably where they will look for the best budget-stretching value,” said Roper.
