Thomsonfly doubles cabin baggage allowance
Thomsonfly has doubled the allowance for cabin bags from 5kg to 10 kg from today (Monday).
The move is part of a new luggage policy which gives passengers a total free baggage allowance of 25kg, of which up to 10kg can be taken onto the aircraft.
The airline’s previous policy was a maximum of 5kg of cabin baggage and a maximum of 20kg of hold baggage.
In packing trials by staff it was found that 10kg was more than adequate baggage allowance for a break of up to four days, a statement from the TUI UK airline said.
Customer feedback also showed that more than 92% of people admitting that waiting at the baggage carousel was the most stressful part of air travel.
“The increased cabin baggage allowance, from 5kg to 10 kg will enable many passengers to carry their travel belongings in the cabin, enabling them to quickly exit the airport terminal and get on with their trip,” the statement said.
The change comes at a time when airlines such as Flybe and Ryanair are imposing rules making customers pay extra charges for each item of baggage they put into the aircraft hold.
Thomsonfly marketing director Maria Heckel said: “We recognise that the range of destinations in our flying programme means that we attract customers who are travelling for very diverse reasons. For example, someone on a weekend break to Prague may need wish to carry only hand baggage, this ensures a speedy exit from their airport and gives them maximum time in the city, however someone going on a two week villa holiday in Spain are more likely to need a suitcase put in the aircraft hold.
“The new policy offers maximum flexibility and we don’t believe customers should pay more for this service. We also do not see why they should be restricted to carrying 5kg of hand luggage as long as the size of their bag meets with the requirements and fits in the overhead compartments.”
The airline said new policy was in line with the regulations set by the Department for Transport for maximum dimensions of hand baggage, which were issued two weeks ago and which are due to come into force by the summer.
