Thousands stranded overnight at airport

Thousands of travellers spent the night in Narita airport’s terminal after snow caused airlines to cancel 71 flights.

Airport officials distributed sleeping bags, water and crackers to 3,400 stranded travellers at the Japanese airport in Tokyo, reports Associated Press.

About 8 cm of snow fell in central Tokyo and around Narita yesterday.

The UK is faring better but some airports are still facing cancellations and delays after snow and ice swept across the UK.

Aberdeen, Humberside, Lands End and Leeds Bradford airports are reporting severe disruption on the BBC’s travel news website.

Delays, cancellations and slight disruption were also reported at Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Durham Tees, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Manchester, Newcastle and Stansted airports.

Customers are advised to check with their airlines.

Rail services have also been affected.

Greater Anglia came under fire after it cancelled 24 trains even though less than an inch of snow had fallen.

Routes between London Liverpool Street and Cambridge, Colchester, Ipswich and Norwich were hit with delays and cancellations.

The cold weather is set to continue all week.
