Tiger sinks claws into Darwin airport, Qantas

SINGAPORE – Tiger Airways Singapore has reduced its fares in the last month of flying between Singapore and Darwin.

All remaining seats on all flights will be available for AUD $99.95 each way inclusive of taxes and charges.

Tiger says it is chopping flights to Darwin due to “unreasonably high airport charges and unprecedented capacity increases from the dominant airline Qantas/Jetstar”.

Tiger said it took the decision “with a heavy heart as Tiger Airways has seen the good that its flights were bringing to the Top End”.

Steve Burns, Tiger chief operating officer, said that making the decision to cease flying to Darwin was “one of the hardest I have ever had to make as we all love flying to Darwin”.

“Unfortunately, due to the level of airport charges and the blatant dumping of additional capacity by Qantas/Jetstar we were left with little choice but to cease flying to Darwin.

“Expect us back if Qantas/Jetstar gets too greedy and the airport wakes up to the benefits of promoting competition by reducing airport charges,” Burns said.

Tiger said the withdrawal of its services from Darwin would cause fares to skyrocket in the coming months “due to the lack of competition on the Darwin-Singapore route”.

Burns added, “You don’t need a crystal ball to tell you that Qantas-Jetstar will be jacking up prices and reducing capacity now they have a monopoly route.

“We have already seen them abandon plans for a third daily service between Darwin and Singapore since we made our announcement.

“Rest assured that Tiger Airways will be keeping an eye on Qantas-Jetstar’s monopoly and will be ready to pounce if airport charges become more reasonable.”
