Tobago expects a tourism boost with soccer legends tournament
Trinidad and Tobago tourism leaders are expecting a huge sports tourism boost next June for a major event showcasing Caribbean soccer legend Dwight Yorke and a host of other celebrated ex-players.
The week-long British Airways-sponsored Tobago Football Legends Challenge at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet kicks off June 15.
This mini-tournament features eight teams made up of 64 former soccer stars primarily from major English Premier League clubs Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham.
Announcing details at a media event at Hyatt Regency, Port-of-Spain, Yorke expects a huge windfall for the Tobago tourism industry.
"The British Airways Tobago Football Challenge is a chance for us to share the beauty of sport in a fun and exciting atmosphere. This event is more than just a major football tournament, it’s a chance to promote Tobago to the world and empower our youth," Yorke said.
"Trinidad and Tobago is a country to sell and we have so much to offer."
The Dwight Yorke Celebrity Golf Day will also take place during the week and will be a prelude to the Dwight Yorke International Golf Tournament in 2016.
The soccer tournament will also be broadcast by TV station Sky Sports.
