Tokyo Disney Resort planning big expansion
Tokyo Disney Resort is said to be mulling a big multi-billion dollar expansion.
Oriental Land Company, which owns and operates the Tokyo Disney Resort under license from Walt Disney Co, will reportedly spend about US$2.7 billion to expand on parking lots.
To free up space it will build multi-storey parking garages on land currently used for single level parking.
This is in addition to previously announced expansion plans for new Beauty and Beast and Big Hero 6 attractions.
It would become the largest investment by Oriental Land since it opened its second Disney park, Tokyo DisneySea, in 2001.
It would expand its total area by about 30%.
The two current parks attract a combined 30 million visitors a year.
It still remains popular with the Japanese but Japan is an aging nation and Disney needs to attract more international travellers amid a booming inbound tourism market.
No details have been disclosed about possible new attractions planned but work would be completed in time for a 2023 opening, according to reports.
