Top ten places to make your skin crawl
Top ten lists are everywhere but the simple truth is that travelers can have a great time in many destinations. But then there are places that are often overexposed by the media that can make “your skin crawl,” says Gadling bloggers.
So they have come up with a top ten list of often popular destinations to skip in 2001.
The list includes Kansas. “All of Kansas” because basically there’s nothing there to see attraction-wise other than the world’s museum for the biggest ball of twine, the site says somewhat tongue-in-cheek.
Cancun, Mexico also tops the list. It made one blogger think less of beautiful Mexico than of “drunken Americans roaming the streets,” though he admits it has some good food.
Also near the top: The Hamptons, New York. “In the season, visitors find the same exorbitant pricing and annoying people, as well as bumper-to-bumper traffic.”
Another US entry is Miami, which a blogger confused for a “walking city” and ended up having to take taxis on every trip. As for the often recommended Little Haiti, it turned out to be so decrepit that is “about one cock fight away from seeming like the real Haiti.”
Still another place to skip: Waikiki. “Don’t pass on Hawaii, necessarily, but bypass this much-lauded, mostly overrated strip of hotels piled so closely on top of one another, the beauty of the beach is overpowered by the sheer masses of people who pile their oiled up bodies onto it,” a blogger says.
Perhaps in a surprise to the many millions who like the place and vote for it with their feet, another blogger suggested skipping “all things Disney.” Why? “All it has to offer me are long lines, high prices and movies that distort history and mangle humanity’s oldest legends,” a nay-sayer wrote.
Overseas, Phuket is often popular with tourists but it “feels like the Tijuana of Thailand — packed with loud, garish bars and touts looking to scam innocent vacationers with offers to muay-thai matches and ping pong shows.”
Still another area to avoid: Nha Trang, Vietnam, where the beaches and seafood offerings are ok, but the “town’s laid-back vibe is increasingly crowded out by mediocre expat bars and sprawl.”
Two other areas to skip are Kuta, Bali, which has “packs of drunken tourists” and Calcata in Italy, a town near Rome perched on cliffs where it’s not uncommon to find hash smokers.
If you want to go to these places, anyway, go at your own peril. “You’ve been warned,” the site says.
