Tourism authority hosting industry investment forum
The ABC reports that the Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) is hosting an forum for operators in Brisbane today looking at issues affecting future tourism investment.
QTIC chief executive officer Daniel Gschwind says future investment in the industry will be a challenge.
He says the global financial crisis is having a negative effect on tourism around the world.
“We’ve had challenges before – many of them and great variety as well,” he said.
“This one is a big challenge for all of us, the economic conditions are not very good for consumer confidence, so it is difficult but we do believe the industry in Queensland has something to offer to the world.
“[It] will continue to be a strong tourism destination.”
Mr Gschwind says in the past the low Australian dollar was good for overseas tourists but that has changed now.
“It should also attract more visitors from overseas, except under the current uncertainties, economic uncertainties in all the countries where we draw our visitors from, of course that stream of visitor is not growing,” he said.
“In fact it has declined a bit for most destinations, but those are challenges we have to confront.”
