Tourism campaign to target Australia
On the day that the Fiji Travel Advisory has been lowered, Fiji’s Tourism Action Group (TAG) is launching a television campaign in Australia on Sunday in a bid to restore visitor numbers from Australia, says TAG chairman Damend Goundar.
He said the second phase of the campaign would begin in February in the print media, online and with tourism trade shows.
Australia is Fiji’s largest tourism market providing more than 200,000 visitors a year, but Australian visitor arrivals dropped dramatically after the Australian government issued a travel advisory warning against visiting Fiji following the military takeover on December 5.

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs said at that time that citizens should “reconsider (their) need to travel to Fiji at this time due to the increasingly volatile political and security situation which could deteriorate without warning”.
Informed media including TravelMole and others including The Fiji Australia Business Council and all the tourists The Mole has spoken with on location this week, have all urged the Australian government to downgrade the advisory and there is no doubt that the Fiji tourism industry will be very relieved this morning.
Damend said the two-week television campaign was about selling destination Fiji with special airfares, with Air Pacific announcing discounted Australia-Fiji adult economy class return fares to Fiji, from $362 plus taxes, from east-coast Australian cities. Also for children under 12, the new fares are from $44 from Brisbane/Melbourne and $28 from Sydney, excluding taxes.
The new fares on sale from January 8 to February 24 are for travel between January 24 and March 31.
Damend added that hotels and resorts had also introduced special holiday packages discounting prices up to 40%, adding that some of the resorts included those on the Coral Coast and resorts at Denarau Island in the Mamanucas.
The TV campaign is a joint initiative by the Fiji Visitors Bureau and national carrier Air Pacific.
