Tourism Concern debate to tackle post-tsunami issues
A debate on the post-tsunami reconstruction and the implications for tourism in Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and other affected areas is to be held by Tourism Concern.
The discussion on October 15 coincides with the publication of a Tourism Concern report that looks at the measures that have been taken so far to rebuild tourism in the tsunami regions together with recommendations for what could be done to improve sustainability in the future.
Following claims that people in parts of South East Asia have been displaced, land reclaimed and vulnerable communities made more so, all in the name of tourism, the pressure group is holding the debate to ask why more sustainable forms of tourism are not being developed in the wake of the tsunami.
Chaired by Guardian journalist and author Polly Pattullo, the debate will examine whether the rebuilding of certain resorts affected by the tsunami is another disaster in the making. Panellists include Jayne Forbes, chair of the World Development Movement, and Tim Robinson from the Pacific Asia Travel Association. Sri Lankan hotelier M.H.A Raheem will also be participating along with Ron Oswald, general secretary of the IUF Workers’ Association.
The debate takes place from 14.00 at the TUC Congress Centre, 28 Great Russell Street, London WC1B 3LS
*Admission is free of charge. To reserve a place, call Tourism Concern on 020 7133 3330 or email: [email protected], www.tourismconcern.org.uk
