Tourism growth continues for New Zealand

Sunday, 28 Jun, 2002 0

According to figures released by Tourism New Zealand, the country received an extra 7,260 international visitors during the month of May, up 14.8% on last year.

This compares with only a 4.5% increase over the same period last year. Total UK visitors for the year ended May 2002 show an increase of 8.7% to 227,007.

Tourism New Zealand said that May, which is late autumn in the southern hemisphere, has always been a quieter period for the UK market, but “the promotion of year-round attractions, a broader range of accommodation and competitively-priced airfares” is encouraging more UK visitors to travel at this time.

Commenting on the figures, Barry Eddington (left), Tourism New Zealand’s regional manager for UK/Europe, said: “This continued growth in the UK market is particularly pleasing, as it comes during one of New Zealand’s quieter months. Encouraging international visitors to New Zealand during the shoulder seasons is always a challenge, but with the tremendous support of the UK travel industry, we are enjoying some success.”

Total international visitor figures for May were also up on the previous year. There were 118,201 international visitors to New Zealand during May 2002, an increase of 6.5% on the same month last year. Tourism New Zealand said a total of 1,952,787 arrivals for the six months ended May 2002 makes this the best ever season for tourism to New Zealand.
