KUALA LUMPUR: Mirza Mohammad Taiyab has been reinstated as director-general of Tourism Malaysia.

The decision follows Mirza’s acquittal last Friday on charges of accepting dental treatment paid for by a company director four years ago.

Tourism Minister Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen told the New Straits Times she was relieved that Mirza’s ordeal was over.

“He has undergone great stress and anxiety and now that his ordeal is over, I think he is ready to charge and lead.”

Mirza said he was looking forward to working with Dr Ng. “I am glad to be back and to be able to work together with the minister who was in the team that helped to build up the industry from the effects of the 1998 financial crisis.”

In August 2008, Mirza was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which states that a public servant is not allowed to receive gifts from those who intend to obtain something in return involving his duties and powers.

Mirza was acquitted of the charges without his defence being called as the prosecution failed to prove a prima facie case against him.

Mirza has worked with Tourism Malaysia since 1982 and was appointed director-general in September 2006.
