Olympic peace initiative just one of the fabulous pitches at Responsible Tourism Networking evening
Responsible Tourism Networking at ITB, organized by the Blue Yonder with Green Circuit and Buffalo Tours again provided a fabulous range of pitches and attracted a record 150 guests.
The event was preceded by ‘The Business Case for Responsible Tourism’ at which Dr. Kien from Buffalo Tours, Sunil from Spiti Ecosphere, Gopinath Parayil from The Blue Yonder, Asit Biswas from Help Tourism, Claire Prest from Grass Routes Journeys and Raj Gyawali from Social Tours Nepal all spoke.
Then, fighting against the music of another travel party at least a dozen brave ‘pitchers’ set their verbal stalls out to over 150 Responsible Tourism Network attendees on the last trade evening of ITB Berlin.
Amongst the pitchers was Gordon Sillence of Destinet announcing an Olympic Peace Through Tourism initiative.
He said: "As the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics draws to a close, we need to reassess how to implement the Olympic Truce so that we can really create 16 days of global peace at the London Olympics. A peace dividend in 2012 has to be seen as good for the industry, for the planet, and for the people. Sustainable tourism and peace go hand in hand. Peace provides the basis for travel, whereas war and conflict disrupt tourist activity. Very often tourism is used a means to regenerate war-affected areas, or develop conflict resolution processes Peace is also essential for the preservation of the environment and biodiversity, both of which are casualties of war.
Tourism stakeholders have a unique role to play in setting up the Truce, as we cut across all walks of life, economic sectors and geographical divides. Stakeholders are also in a unique position to benefit from using the opportunity of a period of global peace during the Olympic Games to boost tourism activity locally and worldwide. ´Olympic Peace through Tourism London 2012 – Defining Tourism Stakeholders` Contributions`

"Till recently, we knew most people who attended the RT networkings in London, New Delhi and Berlin. However, at the 2010 ITB Berlin networking, most of the faces where new, which shows the increasing interest in responsible tourism in markets and destinations. This years’ ITB Berlin networking, brought together about 150 individuals representing buyers, sellers and media. We are glad to see the event growing in its scale and participation". Gopinath Parayil of The Blue Yonder said.
