Tourist killed as water taxi capsizes

A tourist has reportedly died, with three more people missing, after a boat capsized in the United States city of Baltimore. The tragedy took place on Saturday afternoon, when a storm reportedly “flipped” the water taxi, which was carrying 25 people, on to its side. Some 22 of the passengers were rescued but one, a 60-year-old woman who has not yet been identified, died later in hospital. According to the Baltimore Sun, the three people who were not recovered are now presumed dead, and a search for their bodies is still ongoing, while one survivor remains in a critical condition. US authorities reportedly say that the boat was fully licensed and had been regularly inspected by the coast guard. The newspaper ponders: “What remains unanswered was whether the boat’s captain, weather forecasters or marine authorities could have better foreseen the force of the fast-moving, freakish storm that raced over the city in the midst of a mild afternoon and caught the vessel just as it left the dock.” Report by Tim Gillett, News From Abroad
