Tourist on arson charge after Table Mountain blaze
A British tourist has appeared in court in Cape Town following a fatal fire on the slopes of Table Mountain.
A woman visitor from the UK died in the blaze which forced local residents to evacuate their homes and engulfing the city centre in smoke.
The BBC reported that a 36-year-old London man had appeared in court facing charges of arson and culpable homicide. He was released on bail.
A tourist guide was quoted as saying he witnessed a man flick a cigarette end out of a car window in the area where the fire is believed to have started.
More than 150 fire fighters were needed to tackle the fire which was fanned by strong winds.
