Tourist survives three-day trek through snowdrifts
United States: British man walked 30 miles in storm that killed girlfriend
The danger of winter travel in far-off places has been dramatically illustrated with the story of a British tourist who survived after walking 30 miles in a snowstorm that killed his girlfriend.
According to the Daily Mail, 27-year-old George Metcalfe struggled through the storm for nearly three days after his girlfriend Rachel Crowley told him to go for help when the couple’s car became stuck in snowdrifts.
The couple were on a driving holiday in Utah’s famous Zion National Park and had already been trapped in their car for three days, with just a packet of sweets and some sunflower seeds to sustain them.
The pair both set off, but reports suggest that Rachel insisted George abandon her to find help. Her body was found on Monday. Rachel’s mother told the newspaper: “She told him: ‘You go on – there’s no point in us both dying.’ He’s very upset – he didn’t want to leave her.”
