Tourists cut off in central Vietnam floods

HOI AN – Heavy rains leading to severe flooding have caused major problems for tourists in central Vietnam this week.

The weekend floods stranded tourists in Hanoi and Saigon after their accommodation in the flooded areas was cut off by rising waters.

Local reports say that at least 35 people have died in the storms, and others are missing.

Tour operators have been forced to open emergency help lines as several hotels in Hoi An and Hue became inaccessible due to flooding. Many restaurants were forced to close temporarily.

Tour operator Exotissimo said the travel plans of clients had been severely affected as most sightseeing in Hoi An was not possible.

In Hue, roads were also under water, boats trips were cancelled due to the high water levels and access to the Citadel was possible only by canoe.

Near to the river most streets in Hue were flooded and access to some hotels was not possible.

Local media reported that 10 passenger trains with more than 4,000 passengers onboard were being kept in stations because of the heavy rain.

A section of land collapsed on the railway line on the Hai Van Pass causing delays.

Airports in Hue and Danang remained open although trucks were used to ferry passengers in and out.

An Exotissimo spokesperson said earlier this week that the company was doing all it could to alleviate the problems, “but we expect some unhappy clients”.

“Keeping clients away from this area and keeping them in Saigon or Hanoi, or sending them there earlier, might prove difficult because hotels in Saigon and Hanoi are full and changing flights will also prove problematic.”
