Tourists warned of Cambodia bomb plot

British tourists are being advised to take extra care when visiting Cambodia following reports of a plot to bomb Siem Reap, the base for visiting the popular Angkor Wat temple, and the capital Phnom Penh.

Cambodian media is reporting that authorities have foiled the planned bombing by the anti-government Khmer National Liberation Front, which was due to take place over the New Year holiday, which ends today.

Prime Minister Hun Sen warned of the alleged plot last week, saying extra security measures had been taken to ensure people’s safety.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has updated its travel advice for Cambodia, urging tourists to ‘be vigilant and avoid large gatherings’.

It said political tensions remain high following the dissolution of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party last November.

"Political rallies or disputes could trigger violent protests. Monitor local media closely and avoid all protests and demonstrations as they could turn violent," it said.

Around 159,000 British nationals visited Cambodia in 2016.
