Tours to Da Lat, Vietnam beauty spot suspended after tourist death
Local authorities in Vietnam’s adventure tourism hotspot of Da Lat have ordered tour operators to suspend activities at Datanla Waterfalls.
It follows the death of a South Korean tourist last weekend.
Jang Won Seok, 23, died after jumping off the waterfall.
The incident is being investigated and Nguyen Thi Nguyen, director of the Central Highlands province’s tourism department, said all adventure activities there are suspended.
Datanla is a short drive from Da Lat and has become a popular site for soft adventure tours and adrenaline activities.
There has been growing concern over tour companies’ perceived lack of safety measures after several incidents in recent years in the area.
A Polish tourist and a local tour guide fell to their deaths after climbed down a waterfall in Da Lat last year.
The tour operator was fined for conducting the unlicensed activity.
A year earlier, three British tourists died at Datanla falls.
Nguyen said Lam Dong Province officials will look at all activities offered by operators at the waterfalls and closely inspect what safety precautions they have.
Da Lat is one of Vietnam’s top eco-tourist destinations and welcomed about 3.38 million tourists in the first half of this year.
The number of foreign visitors is up about 20% compared to last year.
