Three-day nationwide train strike affecting Spain

Monday, 09 Feb, 2026 0

Spain’s rail network is facing significant disruption as a three-day nationwide train strike gets underway, affecting both domestic travelers and international visitors across the country.

The strike, scheduled from February 9 to 11, has been called by train drivers and railway unions following failed negotiations with government officials and rail operators.

The industrial action centers largely on safety concerns after several recent rail accidents, with unions demanding stronger safety guarantees, more staffing, and increased investment in infrastructure and maintenance.

Services operated by multiple companies are impacted, including state-owned Renfe as well as private high-speed operators Iryo and Ouigo. High-speed AVE routes linking major cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, and Valencia are expected to experience cancellations, reduced frequencies, and delays. Regional and commuter services are also affected, travelers being requested to check their train status before departure although minimum service levels are maintained.
