Home-working travel agency Travel Counsellors is to establish a base in South Africa.

The Cape Town-based operation aims to recruit 70 homeworking agents in its first year.

The move follows nine months of planning and involves the recruitment of William Puk as South African general manager, joining from a consortium of travel agents called Sure Travel where he was managing director for 12 years.

Travel Counsellors, founded by David Speakman, has already expanded from its UK base into the US, Holland, Germany and Ireland and employs 750 travel consultants.

Managing director Steve Byrne said: “It has been part of our plans to launch in South Africa for some time – we believe the market is ideal for us and we are looking forward to offering customers, agents and suppliers a new way of doing business.

Speakman said: “We want to build the best travel company in the world and our expansion into South Africa is an important step along the way.”
