Travel habits of wealthy Chinese exposed

BEIJING – The Hurun Report, the annual ‘China Rich List’ survey of tycoons and entrepreneurs, has revealed the extent to which the wealthy Chinese are traveling overseas on leisure trips.

The 2010 survey showed that the number of rich Chinese travelling abroad increased by 40 percent over the last two years, but foreign business trips decreased by 10 percent.

The rich took an average of 16 days holiday in 2009, with two thirds of them taking foreign holidays, a one third increase on the previous year.

The United States was the clear international holiday destination of choice for the super rich, followed by France and Australia.

France was the most popular European destination, whilst Italy replaced the UK as the second most popular.

Japan was the most popular Asian destination, rising from third place last year amongst Asian nations, and from 14th place to fourth place overall. Singapore was the fifth most popular destination overall.

This year’s most popular domestic destinations were Sanya, Hong Kong and Yunnan respectively.

Hong Kong tended to be particularly popular amongst female respondents.

Shangri-La was the hotel chain of choice, followed by Grand Hyatt and Hilton.
