UK: Mixed day for the sector as winning streak comes to an end
One of the busiest days of the last few weeks on London’s equity markets saw a three-day positive streak come to an end.
The FTSE 100 index of leading shares lost 1.6 per cent of its value, losing 61.9 points to end the day at 3854.9. This was not necessarily a true reflection of the market as a whole, however; the broader-based FTSE 250 index gained 34.7 points to close at 4259 – a daily increase of 0.8 per cent.
In the travel sector, there was mixed news. British Airways lost 1.75p to end the day at 122.25p – still a long way short of its 224.75p year-high, while EasyJet had a much better session and put on 8p to end the day at 216.75p. Fellow no-frills carrier Ryanair also had a positive session and gained 10.5p for a 467p finish.
The airports operator BAA lost 4.25p to close at 477.5p, while First Choice lost 2p on the day for an 87p finish.
