The FTSE 100 Index took off like a rocket yesterday but fizzled out by the close of trading.

It surged ahead by more than 40 points during morning trading, but lost ground after Wall Street came on stream, ending the session on 4268.6, down 3.4 points on its opening mark.

There were mixed fortunes for the travel trade, with First Choice climbing 3.75p to 123.75p, but My Travel slipping to 18p, down 0.5p.

British Airways finished 0.5p up at 177.5p, and easyJet lost a little ground to end on 235p, down 0.75p.

But it was an excellent day for Ryanair, which soared by 11.5p to 429p.
