Trinidad to host Summit of the Americas
Trinidad will host the Fifth Summit of the Americas taking place in Port-of-Spain from April 17 to 19. The summit will be attended by US President Barack Obama and a 1000-strong US delegation, according to a report by go-jamaica.com.
The theme of the Fifth Summit of the Americas is “Securing Our Citizens’ Future by Promoting Human Prosperity, Energy Security and Environmental Sustainability”. The Port of Spain summit will focus on developing feasible solutions to the challenges facing the Hemisphere and delivering tangible and measurable outcomes for all citizens.
Trinidad will be the first Caribbean country to host the summit, which will bring together government officials from the 34 countries that make up the Organization of American States to discuss broad issues of cooperation, energy, security, environmental sustainability and balanced partnerships. The event will be held at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad in Port of Spain.
Leaders are expected to sign the Declaration of the Port of Spain, which will outline policy goals in the fields of energy, education, environment and health during the summit.
Trinidad Prime Minister Patrick Manning said the Summit, which is being hosted by the region for the first time, was being promoted as a Caribbean Community (CARICOM) initiative.
According to the report he also said Trinidad and Tobago and the rest of CARICOM would benefit in more ways than one from the Summit. He said one of the most significant benefits in the twin island republic would be the region’s ability to influence developments in the hemisphere.
