TripAdvisor app blocked in China

China has banned the TripAdvisor app in the country in a latest purge by the Cyberspace Administration of China.

It ordered TripAdvisor and more than 100 other apps to be taken down from app stores, according to state-run daily Global Times.

In a statement, the Cyberspace Administration took action against apps ‘found to be spreading pornography, violence, terror and other illegal information, and offering illegal online services such as fraudulent gambling and prostitution,’ it said.

Most of the apps are China owned, and TripAdvisor’s China business is run by joint venture majority owner Trip.com Group.

It specifically cited the TripAdvisor app for ‘some loopholes in reviewing in the global section, and we took it off for rectification.’

"Tripadvisor’s brand in China is managed by a joint venture between Tripadvisor and Trip.com Group, which owns a majority share," the company said in a brief statement.

Other than some damage to the brand name in China, and possibly impacting the Trip.com JV, it is unlikely to have any material impact to TripAdvisor’s financial performance.
