Tropical Storm watch over eastern Caribbean

Tropical Storm Dorian, currently making its way across the eastern Caribbean, could become a hurricane, weather watchers have said.

Dorian passed by Barbados on Monday and could move toward Puerto Rico by late Wednesday.

The US National Hurricane Center said Dorian was expected to intensify to near hurricane strength by the time it passes the Windward Islands.

The storm is forecast to be a low-grade Category 1 hurricane by the time it moves near Puerto Rico.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office told British travellers: "Tropical Storm Dorian is forecast to affect the eastern Caribbean from Tuesday 27 August. You should exercise due caution and monitor local news and weather reports."

St Lucia’s Prime Minister Allen Chastanet said on Monday the island was ‘expecting the worst’, with the storm due to hit at 2am local time on Tuesday.

The US National Weather Service said: "While uncertainty is high, wind and rain impacts are possible in the Bahamas and Florida later this week and weekend."
