TSA seizes record 104 guns in a single week
Yet another unwanted record was broken at the nation’s airports earlier this month.
For the first time ever the number of firearms seized by Transportation Security Administration screeners topped 100 in a single week.
From February 5 through 11 the agency says it discovered 104 weapons in carry-on bags, beating the previous record of 96 from July 2017.
It says 87 firearms were loaded and 38 had a round in the chamber.
The agency again issued a reminder that firearms and flying don’t mix.
"Each time we find a dangerous item, the line is slowed down and a passenger that likely had no ill intent ends up with a citation or in some cases is even arrested. This is a friendly reminder to please leave these items at home," it said on the TSA blog.
It also showcased other dangerous items discovered including gun powder at Anchorage and a 10-pound artillery shell in a checked bag at Dallas.
"Real, inert, or anything resembling an explosive item is prohibited in both carry-on and checked baggage," the TSA said.
Last month the agency announced nearly 4,000 firearms were seized at airports in 2017, or an average of 11 every day.
