Tube strike this weekend called off

The RMT union has announced the planned strike this weekend by London underground workers over ticket office closures and rotas has been called off.

Last minute talks took place between TfL and union bosses in an attempt to stop the planned 48-hour walkout due to start on Saturday evening.

TfL had said journeys may be disrupted on Saturday evening, Sunday and Monday  if it went ahead.

The threatened walkout has been sparked by the closure of ticket offices and work rosters under the ‘Fit for the Future’ scheme.

Tube maintenance workers have also announced plans to stage a series of 12 and 24-hour strikes until June in a dispute over safety.

Maintenance workers will walk out next Friday at 6.30am for 24 hours. More will follow with seven separate strikes planned up to June.

The Rail, Maritime and Transport union said that 1,500 maintenance staff were involved in the row over ‘basic safety issues’.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: "Nobody should dare to under-estimate the severe impact on track safety that the changes bulldozed through by London Underground have unleashed and which have forced our members to take a prolonged period of industrial action to protect both themselves and their colleagues."
