TUI saves £16m by going green
TUI Travel saved £16m through green initiatives between 2008 and 2010, according to a report issued this week.
The operator said it now ranked sixth in the FTSE 350 for its approach to carbon disclosure and risk and 92% of its businesses have developed and are implementing strategies for sustainable development.
It also confirmed in its 2010 Sustainable Development Report that it plans to become the first UK airline to fly passengers on sustainable biofuels. The first flight will take off from Birmingham for Palma on July 28.
TUI has also published new environmental sustainability guidelines in hotels across the group.
Chief executive Peter Long said: "Sustainability remains a serious business issue for us, in fact now more than ever.
"I am very pleased with the progress we have made this year and that our businesses and brands are making sustainability an integral part of their processes and performance. We are driving to continuously improve the environmental efficiency of the Group.”
Sustainable development director Jane Ashton added: "Being more sustainable supports the long-term success of our tourism business. It’s as simple as that.
"Whilst we have made significant progress we certainly recognise we have a long way to go and there are challenges involved. But the potential benefits are significant – for our business, destinations and the environment.’’
