Tunisia foils beach terrorist attack

Police in Tunisia have foiled a new terrorist plot to attack the beach resort of Sousse, where 38 people including 30 British holidaymakers were killed in June.

More than a dozen suspected Islamists, believed to have trained in Syria and Libya, were arrested, said the interior ministry, amid fears they planned to target politicians, beaches and security centres in Sousse.

The arrests are part of one of the country’s most significant counter-terrorism operations, according to the BBC.

The interior ministry said security forces had arrested seven women believed to be part of the media wing of the IS group’s Tunisia affiliate, Jund al-Khilafa.

News of the arrests comes just days after it was revealed that the Tunisia Minister of Tourism is pushing the UK government to lift its travel ban to Tunisia, at least partially.

Tarek Aouadi, director of the Tunisian National Tourist Office in London, told TravelMole there had been a complete overhaul of security in the country.

Specialist security units, funded by the British Embassy, are now in place to help Tunisia protect itself and tourist visitors from terrorist attacks.

Staff put in place by UK company, Aktis Strategy, have completed a training course and are helping to put a strategic plan into action.
