Tunisia launches major UK ad campaign

Tunisia is to launch a three-month advertising campaign in the UK to try to lure back visitors.

From next Monday, poster ads highlighting Tunisia’s key attractions such as its beaches and ancient archaeology, will run on buses across the country for a two-week period.

The first wave of the campaign will also include ads on national rail, in newspapers and online throughout April, May and June. It will be followed by a second wave of advertising in the autumn.

"We all know tourism in Tunisia took a hit following the Jasmin Revolution, but British visitors have been quick to return and the UK is now our third most important market," said Tunisia National Tourist Office director for the UK and Ireland Wahida Jaiet.

"We still have the sandy beaches and thousands of years of history that have attracted visitors for many years; but add to that the fascinating recent history and a renewed sense of optimism that you can’t help but share, and there really is more to celebrate in Tunisia than ever before."

According to the tourist board, overall visitors to Tunisia were down by around 40% following the Jasmin Revolution, compared to the previous year.

But a spokesman added: "It’s worth noting that the previous year was in fact a record breaking year for the country. UK travellers are steadily returning to Tunisia with February figures only down by 17% on Tunisia’s record breaking 2010 visitor numbers."

UK visitor figures for January:
2008 – 8,925
2009 – 6,485
2010 – 11,823
2011 – 5,600
2012 – 8,408

UK visitor figures for February:
2008 – 16,822
2009 – 12,645
2010 – 15,848
2011 – 1,411
2012 – 13,172
