Tunisia’s tourism minister sends message to the UK travel trade
Tunisia’s tourism minister has sent a message to the UK travel trade saying it is ready for the summer season.
But the message from Amel Karbou does not make reference to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s decision to update its security advice earlier this week.
The FCO has issued a "high threat" terrorism warning for Tunisia saying this could include kidnapping.
"Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreigners," it said, referring to recent attacks.
It also warned there could be further attacks in the run-up to the country’s parliamentary elections due to take place on October 26 followed by presidential elections on November 23.
But in her message to the industry, the tourism minister said Tunisia is "definitely progressing toward democracy with confidence".
She said it was making efforts to promote tourism and to "multiply the quality inspections and safety checks".
"We are about to experience a beautiful summer with hundreds of festivals all over the country. Tunisia is ready to receive more than two million tourists between July and August," she said.
A spokeswoman for the Tunisian Tourist Office said it was waiting for an official comment from the head office on the FCO’s updated advice.
