Two Australians held after Phuket shooting
Two Australian men have been arrested in Phuket over the shooting of two German tourists.
Lawyers said the men were involved in an altercation with a Danish man over a motorbike and one of the men allegedly fired a pistol and accidentally hit the tourists at Patong Beach on Tuesday
The Phuket Wan newspaper said the victim, Johann Baschenegger, 41, was admitted to hospital in a serious condition.
The other man, Joseph Woerner, 71, was in a satisfactory condition.
The Australians, who operate a tattoo parloutr in Phuket, allegedly fled after the shooting but were tracked down by local police.
In June an Australian travel agent was fatally stabbed in a bungled street robbery in Phuket, while a British tourist was shot dead in a Thai bar popular with backpackers in nearby Koh Phangan on January 1.
The UK Foreign Office subsequently issued a warning stating that seven British nationals had been murdered in Thailand since January 2009 and that western tourists have been victims of vicious, unprovoked attacks by gangs in Koh Phangan.
