Two British dentists drown on Bank Holiday break
Two British dentists have drowned in a popular lagoon off the coast of Malta during a Bank Holiday break.
Mehwish Kamran Shabir and Lyace Ali, both 35, were swimming off a busy beach when they started shouting for help at the Blue Lagoon, on the island of Comino, according to local police.
One of them was airlifted to hospital and the other was taken by boat, but both men died.
Fellow dental practice partner at the Sheldon Dental Practice in Birmingham, Hussein Ahmed, was also with the pair when the men got into difficulties but he survived, reports the Daily Mail.
A spokesperson for Malta’s police force said: ‘Members from the Armed Forces of Malta went to assist the two persons.
"One person was taken by a private boat to Imgarr whilst the other person was airlifted to the Gozo General Hospital by a helicopter.
"Unfortunately they were both certified dead."
The Blue Lagoon is popular with holidaymakers but has dangerous undercurrents which can make swimming dangerous.
