At least two people were killed and another 10 were seriously injured in a train crash near Milan early this morning.

Early reports say a regional train came off the tracks at Pioltello Limito station on the outskirts of the city in northern Italy.

About 100 other people suffered minor injuries in the crash, say emergency services.

The accident happened at about 6am local time as the train travelled from Cremona to Milan’s Garibaldi station.

The crash brought trains in out and out Italy’s financial capital to a standstill during this morning’s rush hour.
