Two new ship names unveiled by MSC
MSC Cruises has named two new ships MSC Meraviglia and MSC Favolosa.
The two 93,000-ton vessels are due to join the Italian line’s fleet in 2011 and 2012.
They will become the fifth and sixth ships in MSC’s mid-range Musica class, each carrying 1,275 passengers.
The introduction of the two vessels will bring the company’s fleet up to 14 ships as part of a 5.5 billion euro investment over six years in a total of ten vessels.
MSC Cruises general manager Domesico Pellegrino said: “The new orders are the result of a careful evaluation of trends in the cruise industry in recent years.
“Over the first months of 2008, the cruise market grew by 13% and in the same period our company recorded an increase equal to 32% in terms of passengers.â€
He predicted a “rosy future†for the company and the cruise sector.
The two new additions will enable MSC to carry more than 1.4 million passengers by 2012, according to CEO Pierfrancesco Vago.
Both vessels are to be built at Aker Yards in St Nazaire, France.
