UK anger at Japan and US travel advice

Sunday, 12 Jul, 2005 0

UKinbound, VisitBritain and the government is urging the US and Japan to alter travel advisories warning against travelling to London in the wake of last week’s bombs.

Despite President Bush urging the world to stand firm against terrorism, US military personnel based in the UK have been advised by their superiors not to travel within the boundaries of the M25.

In a more sweeping advisory, Japan has warned all its citizens about the threat of terrorism in the capital and advised them not to travel.

UKinbound chief executive Stephen Dowd said: “It is sending out the wrong messages. The US has been very supportive and its civilians are still coming here so it is difficult to understand this reaction. It’s a poor decision and we would urge them to rescind it.

“The same goes for Japan. The government is working behind the scenes to urge the Japanese to bring the advice up to date and we are talking to Japanese tour operators and urging them to get the right message out. The aim is to change this advice sooner rather than later.”

VisitBritain said it too was working to overturn the advice.

“There is no reason why people should not come here and have a safe and enjoyable time,” a spokesman said. “We are working to ensure the correct information is given out.”
