UK braced for arrival of bird flu

Thursday, 20 Feb, 2006 0

The risk of avian flu hitting the UK has risen after a case of the deadly H5NI strain was discovered in a wild duck in France.

European Union farm ministers are meeting in Brussels today to discuss the introduction of a preventative vaccination for birds against avian flu, the BBC reported.

UK animal health minister Ben Bradshaw reportedly said there was not yet a need for the UK to lock up poultry to combat bird flu despite poultry farmers in France being told to do so.

In the wake of the bird flu discovery in Lyon, Bradshaw told The Independent that the risk of bird flu arriving in the UK was still low but urged the public to report any dead birds they see.

He told the BBC: “There’s no such thing as 100% risk-free. There’s a balance to be struck between precaution and proportion and we think we’ve got that balance right.”
