UK passengers hit by Italian ATC walkout

Friday, 20 Mar, 2017 0

Air traffic control strikes in Italy will disrupt flights in and out of the country today.

Members of five unions will strike between 1pm-5pm local time (12 noon-4pm GMT), with national carrier Alitalia cancelling 40% of its flights, including services between Rome-Heathrow, Rome-London City as well as the service between London City and Milan Linate.

British Airways and EasyJet have warned passengers to expect delays and cancellations. BA said it doing all it can to reduce disruption, including using larger aircraft where possible.

Ryanair has cancelled 40 flights.

Morning and evening schedules between 7am-10am and 6pm-9pm are likely to be unaffected.

More chaos could be on the cards next month, when unions have called for a strike at Alitalia on April 5 over plans to cut jobs and salaries.

The airline’s management is meeting with the Italian government and union members today to discuss the planned cuts.
