UN Tourism preparing the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism 2027

Monday, 16 Feb, 2026 0

The United Nations General Assembly has mandated UN Tourism to implement the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism initiative. With the launch of its new Road Map, the organization has taken another significant step toward fulfilling this responsibility. Developed through a collaborative process, the Road Map received strong support from UN Tourism’s Committee on Tourism and Sustainability (CTS).

UN Tourism Secretary-General Shaikha Al Nuwais said: “Sustainability and resilience are not end goals; they are an ongoing process. The International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism 2027 will enable UN Tourism, as the leading global tourism organization, to help Member States position tourism as a truly transformative sector within the post-2030 agenda.”

Meeting in Madrid, the Committee praised UN Tourism’s efforts to address the priorities of its Member States and welcomed the new leadership’s clear commitment to building strong momentum toward 2027.

Committee Chair and Costa Rica’s Minister of Tourism, William Rodríguez López, added: “As tourism leaders, we consistently emphasize the sector’s transformative potential and its vital role in national and global development agendas, including climate action and forward-looking strategies beyond 2030. The International Year presents a unique opportunity to translate this shared vision into more concrete and coordinated action.”

The path to 2027

The process will be anchored within the Committee on Tourism and Sustainability and guided by a Steering Committee of Member States. It will be informed by consultations held during Regional Commission meetings and formally endorsed by the Executive Council.

The Committee on Tourism and Sustainability (CTS) is a subsidiary body of the Executive Council responsible for monitoring the implementation of the organization’s sustainable tourism work program.
