Unite calls on all BA staff to back cabin crew
Unite is calling on all 30,000 of its members within British Airways to support cabin crew in their long-running dispute with the airline over pay and working conditions after claiming the airline was trying to ‘smash trade unionism’.
Although he has not yet suggested an all-out strike, Unite’s joint general secretary Tony Woodley has hinted that other employees may be asked to join further industrial action.
If other members of Unite working for BA did join cabin crew in a strike, the airline would be grounded.
In a rallying call to all Unite members, Woodley claimed BA was using its dispute with cabin crew to weaken union membership within the airline.
He claimed that 80 crew members had been sacked or suspended by BA in recent weeks, ‘often for the most trivial reasons’.
He added: "This is no longer a matter for BA cabin crew alone If trade unionism is smashed among cabin crew, then we can be sure these methods will be extended to other groups of unionised BA employees."
Woodley is calling an early meeting of representatives of all Unite BA members to discusss a concerted union response to what he claims are the airline’s attempt ‘to eliminate Unite from a sizeable part of the company’.
