United Airlines flight came close to crashing into sea
A United Airlines jet dramatically plunged into a rapid decent, almost ended up in the Pacific Ocean.
It pulled out of the descent just 775 feet above the water.
It had just taken off from Hawaii, bound for San Francisco.
It had only reached a height of 2,200 feet when it started to descend.
It plunged for 21 seconds according to flight data.
The December incident was investigated and deemed pilot error to be a factor, United said.
It only came to light after industry publication the Air Current published details.
“The pilots filed the appropriate safety report. United then closely coordinated with the FAA and ALPA on an investigation, United said.
The pilots were ordered back for additional training.
