United Airlines to invest USD200 million in Hawaii

United Airlines is planning a big investment of $200 million to modernize its facilities in Hawaii.

United has been serving Hawaii for 70 years and the upgrades will result in a better experience for customers, United CEO Oscar Munoz said.

"We couldn’t be more supportive of a faster, better modernization of the product that is the image of Hawaii to the millions of tourists that come here," Munoz said.

"It couldn’t be more needed. All of us that fly here constantly have seen the effects of time."

Enhancements will focus on the tools and resources that United employees need to improve the overall experience.

The $200 million in upgrades will be phased in over the next decade.

Munoz said the carrier will also tweak schedules to allow travelers to depart at night in time for a morning arrival in Hawaii.

Connections will also become more seamless from United’s hubs in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Denver, Houston and Washington DC.

The carrier has added several new Hawaii routes over the last year which performed well, although there has been a recent dip due to the Kilauea volcano eruption as well as more intense competition.

"From our perspective it is working out nicely. I think our expectations were probably slightly more," Munoz said.

Of course you’ve seen a little bit of softening, but again we really haven’t changed much of our volume because we believe in the market."
