United, American plan more furloughs when current payroll support expires
United Airlines has sent out new WARN notices to employees informing them of a new round of furloughs, while American Airlines expects to do the same.
United sent out federal WARN notices to 14,000 employees that it will be forced to carry out moe furloughs when current federal payroll support ends in March.
American will also sent out notices in the coming days.
Airlines first received $25 billion in payroll support which ran until September 2020, and secured another $15 billion in late December which lasts through 31 March.
The Association of Flight Attendants and the Association of Professional Flight Attendants have called for immediate talks to secure additional funding before the expiry date.
The two unions represent about 75,000 flight attendants at American, United and other airlines.
They are pleading for agreement to disperse another $15 billion in financial support to keep employees in jobs until the end of September, or until the funding runs out.
