United dropping Los Angeles-Singapore route
United Airlines is tweaking its long haul schedule from Singapore.
The airline plans to halt nonstop service from Singapore to Los Angeles and switch it to a second daily flight to San Francisco.
The change has been prompted by customer demand, the airline says.
"To better serve customers who asked for alternative departure and arrival times to and from Singapore, we plan to shift our LAX-SIN flight to a second San Francisco frequency starting October 27, 2018," United said in a release.
The 8,700 mile route was at the time the longest serving the US at more than 17 hours’ flight duration.
While United cites stronger demand to LA, it is also likely factoring the extra competition coming from Singapore Airlines, which said it plans to launch flights to Los Angeles ‘very soon.’
"Customers have asked us for a flight getting into Singapore in the evening," Patrick Quayle, United’s VP of international network said of the switch to SFO.
"With this change, we are pleased to offer them this second time channel into Singapore, in addition to improved connectivity across the United network."
That will give San Francisco fliers three daily flight options to Singapore.
Singapore Airlines also serves the route once a day.
